Highline College community,
Good morning. On June 1, U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen heard arguments over the validity of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. While this judge did not make any immediate decisions, immigration law experts say a ruling may be made in the next few months. If Judge Hanen rules against the program, it will go up to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and then to the Supreme Court.
Highline College supports our undocumented and DACA students, staff, and faculty, and community. At this time, there have been no immediate changes to the DACA program, and we know this is still a stressful time for DACA recipients all over the country. Below are resources for all of us to use, whether we are supporting ourselves, our loved ones, or our colleagues and classmates:
On-campus resources:
- Listed here are Answered Questions About Residency Status and Tuition Rates for undocumented students.
- Highline College Counseling Center is a great resource for all students who would like to meet individually with a counselor.
- TRiO Student Support Services still has a few spots left to support undocumented students who are low-income, first-generation, and/or students with disabilities.
- Highline College Center for Cultural Inclusive Excellence provides social justice leadership and education opportunities for students with all identities.
Off-campus resources:
- Read here to learn about next steps if U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen rules against DACA.
- Our library has a comprehensive database of Immigrant and Refugee Resources, including local legal assistance and DACA information. Some of the many resources include:
- The Northwest Immigrants Rights Project, a local organization that supports immigrant community members in Washington state.
- Informed Immigrant DACA Renewal, and organization that is available to help with the DACA renewal process.
- United We Dream, the largest youth-led immigrant network in the country, and offers resources for folks with any type of immigrant status.
- #ICRaceLab’s “Surviving and Resisting: Defining DACA A Toolkit for DREAMers, a helpful mental health and care document for DACA recipients
- Immigrant Legal Resource Center, a national resource for undocumented communities and community members who support undocumented folks.
We will continue to keep the campus updated and informed with any additional updates.
