Dear Highline,
This is a follow up to the message we sent last week about Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a time to remember the fallen men and women who served our country in the armed services. Memorial Day will be observed on Monday, May 27, 2024 and at Highline College, we began observance through the planting of flags on the lawn near Veterans Plaza (North of B7, East of B9) this morning. Thank you to everyone who joined the team from Veterans Services in planting of these flags.
While we honor veterans throughout the year in Veterans Plaza and serve veterans through the Veterans Resource Center in B23., in the week leading up to Memorial Day, this tribute provides our campus community the opportunity to gather and share stories about the veterans in our lives. A common phrase is ‘we all live two lives — the one where we’re physically here and the one in which we are remembered.’
It’s important to distinguish the memories of the individual veterans from the national and foreign policies that shaped their time of service. While we may not always agree on the policies of our government, as leaders at Highline College, we believe that the lives of individuals from our community matter and are worth remembering with dignity and grace.
In memory of our fallen soldiers,
Danielle, Emily, Jamilyn, Josh, Maribel, Melanie, Michael and Tim
