August 8, 2022: Sad New for Our Community

Dear Highline College,

We are incredibly sad to have learned that Mark Wynne, Highline’s manager of Information Technology Infrastructure Services, passed away on Aug. 4, 2022, due to complications after heart surgery. He was 55 years old.

On behalf of Executive Cabinet, I extend my deep condolences to his family, friends and those who worked alongside him.

Mark was born in Puyallup and attended high school in both Sequim and Everett. He worked in the restaurant industry before coming to Highline as a student to train in IT. At the time, Mark was a single dad raising his two young boys.

In 2003, he joined Highline College as a student employee in Instructional Computing while in the CIS program. Mark then worked his way up to becoming a full-time IT Specialist/Lab Technician after graduating from Highline. He quickly became known as a gracious, customer-focused and reliable staff member who would do what needed to be done to make the college and team successful.

After Instructional Computing and Administrative Technology merged and reorganized in 2014, Mark settled into the role of Infrastructure Services Manager in the newly-formed IT Services department. He went on to serve in this role for eight years, leading the team responsible for networks, servers, telephony and cloud infrastructure for the college. Mark, along with the rest of his team, played a key role in the success of the Pacific Rim Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (PRCCDC) over the 10 years that it was hosted at Highline.

Mark was extremely proud of his sons Justin and Andrew and was also very happy to have become a grandfather to four beautiful grandkids over the last few years. He was an avid scuba diver and used to volunteer for the MaST Center doing collection dives. That hobby led him to meet his fiance, Bonnie. Mark had found so much happiness over the last couple of years, and I, along with the Highline community, am saddened to see that end too soon. His co-workers describe him as “extremely capable, dependable, generous, gracious, giving, fun, kind and respectful.”

Mark’s legacy to Highline College helped create the college we know and love today, and for that, Highline is forever grateful.

Mark had specifically requested no formal service. His family is planning an informal celebration of his life in the coming weeks. If you are interested in participating, please contact Tim Wrye or Pat Daniels and they will share details as they have them.

Sincerely,
John
